Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. Covering an area of 603,628 km2, it is the second largest country in Europe after Russia, which borders the east and northeast. Ukraine also borders Belarus in the north; Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west; Romania and Moldova in the south; and has a coastline along the Azov and Black Seas. With a population of about 41.4 million, it is the eighth most populous country in Europe. The capital and largest city of the country is Kyiv.
Ukraine gained independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In 2013, after the government of President Viktor Yanukovych decided to suspend the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union and seek closer economic ties with Russia, a multi-month wave of demonstrations and protests, known as the Euromaidan, began, which later escalated into the Ukrainian revolution in 2014. year, which led to the overthrow of Yanukovych and the creation of a new government. These events formed the basis for the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014 and the war in Donbass in April 2014.
The expulsion of Yanukovych prompted Vladimir Putin to begin preparations for the annexation of Crimea on February 23, 2014. Using the Russian naval base in Sevastopol as cover, Putin ordered Russian troops and intelligence agents to disarm Ukrainian forces and take control of Crimea. After the troops entered Crimea, a fake referendum was held on March 16, 2014, and according to official figures, 97% of respondents wished to join Russia. On March 18, 2014, Russia and the self-proclaimed Republic of Crimea signed an agreement on the annexation of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation. The UN General Assembly reacted by adopting Resolution 68/262 stating that the referendum is invalid and supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
In addition, in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, armed men who declared themselves local militias with the support of pro-Russian protesters have seized government buildings, police and special police stations in several cities and held unrecognized status referendums.
Now part of eastern Ukraine and Crimea are still occupied by the Russian military and local coloborators.
As a result of Russia's aggression on the territory of Ukraine, more than 260,000 people were left homeless and forced to leave their homes. More than 44 thousand people were killed or injured.
