Dear Fellow Hams and Shortwave Listeners:
Thanks very much for visiting this page!
I first became licensed as a Novice ham radio operator in 1976 when I was 25 years old. My shack (in a very small apartment at the time) consisted of a Heathkit HR 1680 (receiver) and a (borrowed) Hallicrafters Transmitter with just a few crystals for a band or two. Then, I purchased a used Swan 350 Transceiver followed a few years later by a Drake Transmitter and a Drake Receiver. (My last transceiver was an Icom 735 and my current transceiver is an Icom IC-718, which I use with an Inverted "V" antenna.)
During most of this time, I used an "all-purpose" antenna strung on the inside of the apartment! Amazingly, DX was plentiful (almost everyday), but the solar cycle was at a much different point than it is today. That was an exciting time period in ham radio and therefore a time that would easily allow me to do FB work with less than an average antenna system. Ham radio stores were "everywhere" and so was ham radio "fever!" Tubes were still used in most transmitters and tube testers could be found almost everywhere - even in drug stores!
In the late '70s, I developed a keen interest in computers and electronics that launched me into sending and receiving RTTY and CW via a TRS-80 (Radio Shack) computer with a monochrome monitor. Later, the progression of computers for my ham radio use was an IBM PC, Apple IIe, Apple IIc (pictured at lower right), Apple Macintosh and on up the line through the computers and laptops of the '90s to the present day. (The experience I have gained using these computers as a ham radio operator over the years, has also helped me immeasurably as a public school music educator!)
While I was a committed PC (IBM) user, I have now become an avid user of the MacBook Air. Unfortunately, the ham radio software for the MacBook is, in my opinion, somewhat limited and difficult to configure with my particular setup compared to most PC software. Therefore, I use an HP Envy with Windows 7. Ham Radio Deluxe is by far my favorite software program for operating in the digital modes.
I retired in June, 2016 after 40 years in the classroom as a public school music educator and classical clarinetist, and have finally found some time to pick up the ham radio hobby once again. Last year I became very interested in operating PSK31 and JT65, as I found them to be extremely interesting and fun modes. Setting up and using the complex software parameters took me several weeks to learn on my own, not to mention the need to learn the new online methods of QSLing/logging. (Now, I have been doing almost nothing else but using the FT-8 mode, and like it very much!)
I am still an "old-timer" when it comes to operating CW. I just started using my new Bencher BY-1 Iambic Paddle Keyer. It doesn't seem like that long ago when I could get a J-38 (look-alike) straight key from Radio Shack (AMECO K-4) for about $5.95!
Fortunately, it seems that my keen interest in computers and electronics has once again allowed me to have the sense that I am almost starting all over again with new and exciting challenges in amateur radio. I try to balance the best of the "old" with the best of the "new" worlds of ham radio operating.
I will forever be grateful to my two Elmers in the '70s for getting me so beautifully launched and sustained into the great hobby and "art" of ham radio: Greg, WA2EHV; and Frank, WA1VNR.
Again, thanks very much for visiting this page.
73 and GL!
Charles (KC1JA)
P.S. I finally received my mixed eWAS on February 23, '19. I am now just one state short of my eWAS for a single mode - FT8. The digital modes helped me out a great deal in obtaining my eWAS over the last 20 months or so.
P.P.S. If you have an interest in the areas of music education or making homemade wine, you may wish to visit a few of my websites: The first is my music education website at https://sites.google.com/site/charlesacondello/ and the second is my making homemade wine website at https://sites.google.com/site/winemakingbyccondello/ Music/music education and home winemaking are some of my greatest passions.
