I'm an Extra class ham living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I got my Technician in May of 2015, my General in March of 2016 and my Extra in May of 2016.
I am an avid off-roader and was used to using a CB for vehicle to vehicle comms in the backcountry. While at an overlanding seminar I got exposed to the capabilities of ham radio and APRS and started studying for my license the next day. My first “shack” was my Jeep Wrangler. I had mobile dualband and HF rigs for almost two years before I ever started setting up my base station at home. My vanity callsign KJØCFW was picked for “Colorado Four Wheeler”.
I am an active volunteer/member of the Special Communications Unit of the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management. I am also involved in Skywarn weather spotting and with ARES Region 2 District 2. So far, every year since 2016 I have manned a ham radio checkpoint at 13,185ft at the top of Mosquito Pass the last weekend of July and the first weekend of August for the Fairplay and Leadville Colorado Pack Burro Races.
My Elmer KØHY (now a Silent Key) was a Kenwood guy and now so am I. His name was Jim Jones so I joke that I drank the Kenwood Kool-Aid.
Home HF: Kenwood TS-480SAT into a Chameleon Emcomm III as a sloper for 160m thru 10m and an Arrow GP52 for 6m.
Home VHF/UHF: Kenwood TM-D710GA into a Diamond x50 dual band base antenna at about 20 feet. Also have a pair of stacked 2m Loops on the roof for working 2m SSB with the IC-706MKIIG in my Go Kit.
Mobile HF: Kenwood TS-480SAT usually connected to a 20m or 40m hamstick for daily driving but also carry 6m, 10m and 75m hamsticks. Plus I pack a Wolf River Coil SB Platinum Mega TIA and a Chameleon Emcomm III Portable for HF operations when I’m no longer “mobile” but still out in the middle of nowhere.
Mobile VHF/UHF: I have a TM-D710GA in both my Jeeps running APRS.
Go Kit HF/VHF/UHF: Icom IC-706MKIIG (I know - how did that Icom get in here?) with a Wolf River Coil SOTA Special for HF and a N9TAX roll up as well as an Elk log periodic for dual band VHF/UHF .
Portable VHF/UHF: I have a couple Kenwood TH-D72s, one is always part of my everyday carry kit and the other is used for playing with satellites paired with the dualbander Elk log periodic. I also have a Anytone AT-D878UV Plus and a TYT MD-UV390G for DMR; the Anytone is everyday carry and the TYT lives in the shack with an Openspot2 Hotspot. I even own a couple UV-5R+ HTs to keep in 72 hour bags.
