Hi! My Name is David.
I've been using HAM Radio since 12/2024 and I have been using UHF / VHF FM and DMR. I cut my teeth on CB radio and learned how to build my own CB antenna and get that coveted SWR of 1:1! I decided to get my ham license after seeing others at the college with their neat Baofeng HTs and their new Ham Radio Club that was FREE to join!!! Hurricane Helene devistated Western North Carolina (I live just outside of Charlotte, NC) and that was the added motivation for me to get my Technician license. I really want to get into this hobby, learn and maybe be helpful to others.
I think my Grandpa would be very proud of me, He was a Radio Operator on a B-17G flying fortress during WWII. He served for 2 tours and (by the Grace of God) made it home in one piece. He had all kinds of radios on that airplane. I remember asking him about it and he said they would communicate their location, statuses of crew / airplane and targets they had hit. He really didn't want to talk about it too much, "it was just a job". I can understand why, now as I'm older, what a stressful experience. All that needs to be genuinely said to Grandpa (and his generation) is "I love you" and "Thank you for everything". All the more reason to study Ham Radio and remember that we're riding on the shoulders of giants. His last words to me were "Be good" and I intend to do my best to live up to that.
On a lighter note, I'm a Student of Computer Science/Engineering, electronics and enjoy working with PC, MAC, Linux and Raspberry Pi systems. There is always something new or neat to learn. I've learned to take good notes and stay as organized as possible. It helps maintain some sanity.
Currently studying for a Extra license and I recently acquired a new Xiegu G90 HF Radio.
