Amherst Ohio is located in the north central part of the state, about 30 miles west of Cleveland Ohio and 5 miles south of Lake Erie.

I became interested in ham radio in the early 60's as a Short Wave Listener, when AM was the mode of the day. Popular Electronics magazine was issueing SWL call letters.  Mine was WPE8FRF.

Got my first ham license in 1966 when I was 16 years old for one year as WN8TVT (Novice).  Upgraded to Technician on my second attempt in 1968 and received the first WB8 call in north central Ohio.  Everyone in the area on 6 & 2 meters AM thought they were working DX.  

Without low band CW privledges at that time, I listened to W1AW code practice to increase my code speed.  Finally upgraded to General in 1971 on my first attempt at the FCC office in Detroit, MI.  Upgraded to Advanced at the same office in 1973.  Thought about upgrading to a 2x2 call, but this one's been with me so long; I am WB8ACU and have been since 1968!
